Current Rio Hondo College students: The student health fee paid at the time of enrollment
provides each student free access to most of the services offered in Student Health Services Office.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), individuals will have new insurance options starting January 1, 2014. Everyone is required to have health coverage either through your parents or spouse, an employer, Medi-Cal, state health programs, or the Health Insurance Marketplace. If you don’t have health coverage, you may have to pay a penalty.

Follow these simple steps:

  • Find out if you currently have health insurance coverage (you may already be covered on your parent’s insurance) and determine if you will be covered through 2014. The Affordable Care Act requires plans to make the coverage available until a child reaches the age of 26. If you are a parent, be sure that your children have health insurance.
  • If you need health insurance, go to Health for California website.
  • This is where you can go online to find health insurance. The Health Insurance Marketplace makes it easier to find health plans and choose the one that is best for you. Whether you’re uninsured, you’ve been denied coverage in the past, or you just want to explore new options, the Health Insurance Marketplace will give you more choice and control over your health coverage. Think of it as online shopping for health insurance.
  • All plans are listed in one place so you can make side-by-side comparisons of the price, benefits, quality, and other features important to you. Review each health plan, compare costs, and see what’s covered — all of this information will help you make an informed decision.
  • Every plan is required to cover important benefits including doctor visits, hospital care, emergency care, prescriptions, preventive care and more. You may also get free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Pre-existing health conditions like asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, pregnancy, or a disability will be covered. Plans won’t be able to deny you coverage or charge you more for pre-existing health conditions.
  • Choose the health plan that works for you (and your family), and sign up on the spot. If you need help, ask. Your questions can be answered online, by phone, or in person through the Covered CA website.
