WHITTIER – Río Hondo College will hold its first-ever Major Declaration Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, working with students to envision a clear path to their goals as a way of helping to ensure success.
The event will feature a chance to network with faculty, counselors and staff from across all academic disciplines, learn about key transitional skills and the connection between majors and career options.
Río Hondo College will provide in-depth information about its 11 Areas of Interest with approximately 100 majors, including 29 that offer guaranteed admission to the Cal State University system. Majors range from automotive technology to homeland security, nursing to computer science.
“Our goal at Río Hondo College is to guide our students as they pursue their dreams,” Superintendent/President Dr. Arturo Reyes said. “The more information we can put into their hands to visualize those dreams taking shape, the better chance they have of succeeding.”
College leaders say the event holds special significance for its large population of first-time college students, who don’t always have the background to effectively navigate higher education opportunities.
Declaring a major builds confidence for students; the sooner they declare a major, the more strategic they can be in selecting courses and streamlining their educational path, whether that leads to a career option or a transfer to a four-year institution, officials said.
“We want our students to know that we as a campus are committed to supporting them in making this important decision and guiding them to achieve their academic and career goals,” Reyes said. “Instead of waiting for them to seek out guidance, we are coming to them.”
The event will also feature In-N-Out lunches for the first 750 students to participate and a variety of swag items.
