WHAT: Rio Hondo College will greet new and returning students when fall semester commences with a new major in homeland security, an expanding roster of academic support services and a pantry resource to combat food insecurity.
Students will host a Welcome and Information booth in the mid-quad area from Monday, Aug. 20, through Thursday, Aug. 23. They will answer questions and walk new students to classes.

DETAILS: Rio Hondo College courses begin Saturday, Aug. 18, but most new students won’t begin classes until Monday, Aug. 20. New this fall is an Associate of Science degree in homeland security that will prepare students for entry-level jobs in the high-demand field, offer new training for those already in the field and prepare workers or students for advanced homeland security studies at four-year colleges or universities.
New students will be able to take advantage of Rio Hondo College’s deep array of student support services, including the First Year Success Center, tutoring, programs to guide students along their chosen courses of and services for students in financial need or who have been part of the foster care system. Rio Hondo College offers a pantry resource called the RioSource Room, a combination pantry and guide to other services for students in need. Launched in 2017-18, the RioSource Room is a key element in the College’s battle against food insecurity, an issue for many community college students.
