Test proctoring or test facilitation is an academic accommodation provided to Rio Hondo College DSPS students, where the student gets additional time to complete their examinations. This additional time is determined during an interactive intake process between the student and a DSPS counselor or LD Specialist. To make the determination for test proctoring; the DSPS Counselor or LD Specialist reviews the student’s documented disability, listens to the student’s self-disclosure, and observes the student during the interactive process to determine the most appropriate test proctoring accommodation.
Test Appointments
- Qualified students making a test proctoring appointment are required to make the appointment a minimum of three (3) business days prior to the date of their exam. This allows time for the exam to reach the DSPS office.
Scheduling
- Students are encouraged to take exams on the same day and time as their class. However, with extra-time consideration, this may not be possible. In those instances, arrangements must be approved by instructors and are made as close as possible to the regularly scheduled day and time.
Extra Time
- Students who receive extended time for exams will typically receive 1.5x or 2x as the general standard extension time, with 1.5x being the most common extension used. Each request is reviewed by a DSPS staff member to confirm the time listed on the Academic Accommodation Plan.
Distraction Reduced Setting
- Some students qualify for a distraction reduced setting, which provides a semi-private room that is quieter and less distracting than a traditional classroom setting. These rooms typically hold from 1 to 6 students depending on the layout.
Testing Rooms
- DSPS testing rooms may be occupied by more than one student at a time. Students sharing a testing room will not be taking the same exam. All students are under supervision during the testing process.
Test Security
- The security and integrity of an exam is a fundamental priority for DSPS staff. Students take exams under DSPS staff supervision with all backpacks, purses, and other unauthorized materials or electronics (cell phones, smart watches, iPads, laptops, etc.) secured in locked cabinets or stored in a DSPS office during the exam.
Rescheduling a Test
- Students, the DSPS Director, test proctoring staff, or DSPS Counselors are not allowed to reschedule an exam unless either approved by the professor or an emergency occurs which prevents the test from being proctored on the scheduled date and time.
- The professor should email or call the DSPS office to confirm they have approved a rescheduled exam. Please note, DSPS may not be able to accommodate a last-minute rescheduling, as we experience high volumes of testing.
- If an emergency occurs, requiring a test to be rescheduled, DSPS will contact the instructor to discuss why the test needs to be rescheduled.
Academic Honesty
- Any violations of the Rio Hondo College Code of Conduct including cheating, plagiarism, or any other acts of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Executive Dean of Student Affairs and Equity, and your instructor will be notified.
- These actions may be considered an abuse of DSPS services and may result in a suspension of DSPS services.
Tardiness and No Shows
- The test proctor will wait no more than 15 minutes for students who show up late. After 15 minutes you will be marked as a “no-show”.
- The amount of time you are late will be taken off the total amount of time you have to complete the exam. Your late arrival may also result in having to reschedule your exam appointment.
- If you do show up three times during the semester, you may have to attend a mandatory meeting with the DSPS Director to determine if your testing privileges will be stopped for that semester.
- The instructor may set additional testing rules that will be followed by the DSPS staff.
Appropriate Behaviors
- Students may not ask test proctors for help answering exam questions. In addition, students may not leave during the exam to attend class or take a break, etc. Unless breaks are an approved accommodation for the student and if they are, the student will be monitored to prevent compromising the exam.
- All exams must be started and completed in the same session. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the exam during designated testing hours that do not interfere with other activities, such as class.
- Every effort will be made not to interfere with the class lecture time.
