The DSPS office utilizes specialized equipment and software to help students with disabilities. Some of this equipment is available for students to check-out for the semester, some is available for placement in the classroom, and some is available in the DSPS High Tech Center for use by students in the DSPS office. These items fall under three broad categories They are Adaptive Furniture, Equipment Loan, and Assistive Technology.
Adaptive Furniture
Adapted furniture provides greater access to classroom facilities or ease of use because of physical limitations. Furniture adapted for use in the classroom may be provided for a student after written request and counselor approval.
Some everyday items requested are:
- Classroom tables
- Cushioned chairs
- Foot/leg rests
- Wheelchair accessible desks
Equipment Loan
The DSPS office has selected equipment available for loan. The student will be held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment. Equipment loans are upon counselor approval and will only be made if:
- The student is enrolled in classes.
- The equipment is for school-sponsored activities.
Commonly checked-out equipment includes:
- Digital Recorders
- Electronic spellers
- Smart pens
Assistive Technology
Rio Hondo College offers adaptive technology to accommodate the educational limitations of students served by DSPS. Some examples include:

- Screen Reader Software
- Talking Dictionaries
- Visual Idea-Mapping Software
