At Rio Hondo College, we prioritize inclusive communication practices to ensure all students, regardless of their hearing abilities, have equal access to education. Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting to the campus community.

ASL Interpreter Services
- Interpreters sit in front of the class, usually in an area near the instructor. The interpreter signs and mouths what s/he hears and voices what is signed. Interpreters are available for deaf and hard-of-hearing students taking mainstream classes. Students can also request interpreter services for:

- Appointments on campus
- Meetings with instructors or tutors
- Labs
- Presentations
- Special events on campus
- Other educational activities
Real-Time Captioning
- Students who use real-time captioning services will have captioners provide live-in classroom communication via a stenograph, laptop, or another electronic device. Audible classroom communication will appear in real time on a monitor for the student to read.
Notetaking Services
- Notetakers provide class notes to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students, ensuring they have access to essential course materials. Contact us to arrange notetaking services.
Student Development Resources
- Just as hearing students may find community college more challenging than high school; deaf and hard-of-hearing students may face similar challenges. To help their success in college, these students might consider enrolling in Educational Development 101 (EDEV 101).
