Welcome to the Rio Hondo College Reading Department webpage! We are one of six academic departments within the Communications and Languages Division. Our faculty and staff are a diverse and dedicated group, whose mission is to prepare students to succeed across academic disciplines, throughout career paths, and as empowered members of society. Our Reading Program guides students toward becoming independent readers and thinkers by incorporating individual, collaborative, and whole group learning dynamics. Reading faculty recognizes the diverse population at Rio Hondo College and seeks to provide an atmosphere that fosters encouragement and acceptance of different ideas and opinions for dynamic learning to occur. In addition, the department recognizes that reading is not a subject learned in isolation but a process that is acquired across the curriculum.
The Reading Program consists of sequential levels of instruction and college–level transferable courses, some of which may be taken online. Our program also includes an individualized Reading Lab, which has an online component and is a corequisite for two sequential-level courses, Basic Reading and Intermediate Reading Skills. Our reading courses and lab are designed to help students become better readers and learners, and our faculty and staff are devoted to helping students succeed in college and future careers. Thank you for taking the time to visit our Web page, and if you have any questions about the Reading Program at Rio Hondo College, please feel free to contact us.
