Rio Hondo’s CTE Division was part of an intercollegiate design competition during this semester. Students involved were working with the County of Los Angeles and Metro to “Reimagine Bus Stops in The First Supervisorial District”. The purpose of this project was to engage students with real-life hands-on experiences to connect classroom learning to real situational problems when it comes to design.
Under the guidance of Associate Professor Farrah Nakatani, Graphic Arts Major Jasmina Elysayed, and Architecture Majors Fatima Barajas Serrano, Remberto Candelario, Joseph Ryan George, Lycette Moran, Jacob Perez, and Marco Rodriguez were divided into two groups and each group came up with their own designs to present to the judges.
Group 1 Design:
(Jasmina Elysayed, Fatima Barajas Serrano, Joseph Ryan George, Lycette Moran)
Group 2 Design:
(Remberto Candelario, Jacob Perez, Marco Rodriguez)
Students were evaluated based on Overall Design, Cost, and Funding, as well as Design Rational/Community Appeal. Students presented their designs to the judges via Zoom. Judges consisted of representatives from the Department of Public Works, Metro, and LA County Economy & Efficiency Commissioner (EEC) & Transit Stop Solutions.
Winners were announced on December 8, 2021, and Rio Hondo’s Group 2 took Third Place. All students involved appreciated the experience and the knowledge they gained with this ‘real-life, hands-on’ adventure.
