INFORMATION MEETINGS FOR UPCOMING – CLASS 218
Are HELD IN PERSON and open to everyone. No registration or early sign-ups are required. They are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.
On the first (1st) Wednesday, the meeting is at 12:00pm
On the third (3rd) Wednesday, the meeting is at 7:00pm
MEETING LOCATION – Held at Rio Hondo College (3600 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, CA 90601) at the Administration of Justice Building – Police Academy found on the 2nd floor. *signs will be posted the day of, displaying the exact meeting location.
The information meeting is the first step towards applying to the Police Academy. If your intent is to apply to an upcoming academy class, attendance to the information meeting is mandatory.
ACADEMY PROGRAM INFORMATION
To be eligible to attend the Basic Police Academy class, each applicant MUST:
- Attend mandatory Police Academy Information Meeting;
- Pass the POST PELLET B (reading and writing) Test;
- Pass the Physical Agility Test (fitness); and,
- If applicant receives a “Letter of Acceptance” into the academy, they will have to complete the Academy application process. This includes applicant interview, medical clearance, proof of medical insurance, DMV driving history, and DOJ Firearms Clearance.

The Academy administers the POST Entry-level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB).
The PELLETB is a multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank written examination designed to measure reading and writing ability. Applicants are given 2½ hours to complete the PELLETB, which contains five sections:
- Spelling (applicants select the correct spelling of a word from a list of options)
- Vocabulary (applicants select the correct meaning of a word from a list of options)
- Clarity (applicants select the sentence that is most clearly written from a pair of options)
- Reading Comprehension (applicants read a passage and answer questions about the passage’s content)
- CLOZE (applicants use contextual clues to complete a passage that contains blanks/missing words)
The Academy requires a T-score of 42 or higher in order to apply for entry into its Basic Police Academy.

b. 165 Drag 32ft
c. Chain Link Fence Climb 6ft
d. Solid Wall Climb 6ft
e. 500 Yard Sprint
POST regulations prohibit examinees from taking this exam more than one time in any 30-day period from any exam site in the State of California. Be advised that if you make multiple attempts to take this exam within a 30-day period, POST will invalidate your exam.
INTENSIVE BASIC ACADEMY (Intensive format – 6 months)

The intensive basic academy is a full time, 915-hour intensive course which satisfies the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) minimum training requirements for California entry-level peace officers. This course typically meets Tuesday-Saturday, 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is approximately six months in duration. The academy is designed for peace officer recruits who can dedicate their full attention to the intensive training program.
The Rio Hondo Police Academy is a full-Time academy requiring a strong commitment by recruits. Upon graduation, cadets receive a certificate of completion which enables them to qualify for any police department in California. Several police agencies routinely recruit from each Academy session. In many cases, pre-service cadets are hired while still attending the Academy.
The approximate total cost for attendance at the Rio Hondo Police Academy is $6,500, which includes the cost of tuition and equipment.

Minimum Standards for Employment
The minimum selection standards for peace officers in California are set forth in Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031. Every California peace officer must:
- be free of any felony convictions;
- be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (CHP officers must be US citizens at time of appointment);
- be at least 21 years of age;
- be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record;
- be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation;
- be a high school graduate, pass the General Education Development test or have attained a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited institution; and
- be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
