WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WILDLAND FIRE ACADEMY PROGRAM?
A. Completion of the following prior to applying:
- You MUST attend one information meeting. We offer 2 options, but are only required to attend one of the 2 options.
- Option 1 – Attend one (1) in person Wildland Fire Academy information meeting specific only to the Wildland Fire program. Meeting dates, times, and location will show above only if, there are dates available.
- OR
- Option 2 – Attend one (1) online Fire Academy information meeting that will cover the Wildland Fire program. These meetings are presented online via ZOOM on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. ZOOM link can be found by clicking HERE.
- Complete FTEC 044
- Complete ONE (1) of the following: WFT101, WFT102, WFT103, WFT104, or WFT105
B. Earn a qualifying time on the MANDATORY Work Capacity Test (WCT), also called or referred to as the “Pack Test”. WCT is administered in compliance with NWCG standards for arduous duty (in accordance with NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Position Qualifications, PMS 310-1).
- PACK TEST – Consists of completing a 3-mile walk over level terrain in 45 minutes or less carrying a 45-pound pack.
- In preparation, begin a very active physical conditioning program (NFIC Fire Fitness Challenge).
HOW DO I ENROLL IN THE WILDLAND FIRE ACADEMY?
Submit a WFA Application with the Medical form. The Medical form needs to be completed by your doctor when getting your physical examination. A link containing both forms in one single PDF, will be available early Fall. These forms are typically due at the beginning of November. When the link becomes available, it can be found at the top of this page.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE WILDLAND FIRE ACADEMY?
A. The RHWFA has a RIGOROUS PHYSICAL TRAINING PROGRAM. Students will run trails (not city streets), perform calisthenics, become proficient in wildland fire hand line construction, complete wildland engine hose evolutions, and hike miles of trails under realistic training conditions.
B. Classroom instruction and block exams will ensure knowledge retention.
C. The staff will provide a professional, realistic level of training and counseling.
D. You will meet a great group of men and women who TRULY desire to obtain fire service careers. Some of them will become your friends for life.
E. You will have the opportunity to join one of the best hand crews working for the Angeles National Forest. If you successfully complete the academy and join the Roadrunners you will have taken a giant step in obtaining a fire service career.
