ACEDD-CAD PROGRAM: The Architecture, Civil, Engineering Design Drafting and CAD (Computer Assisted Drafting) program at Rio Hondo College introduces students to the vast career fields of Design Drafting and prepares them to enter the workplace as CAD technicians / designers. The program also prepares students to transfer and continue their education in Engineering, Architecture and Design. In addition to these, the program provides a place for those currently working in related occupations to improve and up-grade their job skills. The Program has received national recognition and its curriculum is annually evaluated by industry professionals. The programs faculty is comprised of professional educators with numerous years of teaching and industry experience. In its state of the art facilities the program provides a lab based hands on learning environment offering instruction in four content areas. ACUTE CERTIFIED NURSE'S ASSISTANT: Each student holds a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate from the State of California upon entrance. This program provides opportunities, for the graduate to practice in the acute care settings. |
ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE: The Administration of Justice Department is part of the College’s Public Safety Division, one of the state’s largest fully comprehensive public safety training programs. The division provides educational and training programs in various state certified programs through its Regional Training Centers for Law Enforcement, Fire Technology and homeland security. The academic programs provide certificate programs, associate of science degrees and transfer degrees. The Administration of Justice programs prepare students with the basic knowledge to know about the various law enforcement and correctional career fields. The academy programs also prepare students with the basic state certifications to become a P.O.S.T. certified police officer, dispatcher or laws of Arrest (PC 832). For those career professionals advanced courses are taught in a variety of subjects, some of which are perishable skills, force options, driving simulators, firearms and homeland security classes. |
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY: The Rio Hondo College Alternative Energy Technology Program is an ETA International Certified program that provides opportunities for its students to gain knowledge and experience in the Green Energy industry. The faculty recognizes the importance of real-world experience and tailors teaching and learning strategies to include this through student-centered, competency-based, and hands-on instruction. The skills and knowledge gained from the program provides the basis for student and career success by delivering the resources that lead to industry-based certificates, college-based certificates of achievement, associate degrees, transfer degrees, and lifelong learning. |
ANIMATION: Rio Hondo’s Digital Animation program provides students with the artistic and technical background that will prepare them for the creativity and innovation necessary to succeed in the entertainment arts. Industry Professionals from local studios guide the animation program at Rio Hondo. Each semester students have an opportunity to get to know people working in the Entertainment Arts through workshops, Panel discussions and lectures. |
ANTHROPOLOGY: With an emphasis on describing the diversity of people across societies and through time, Anthropology uses techniques drawn from both social sciences and the hard sciences to investigate issues ranging from genetics to religious rituals and from the distant past to the immediate present. |
ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND DRAWING CONTENT AREA: The Architecture and Architectural Design and Drawing content area prepares students to work as CAD technicians / designers in building design and construction as well as in development of products used in the housing and building industry. The content area provides instruction in CAD software applications that include the latest BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology. Software applications include: AutoCAD, MicroStation, REVIT, and Bentley Build. In addition to application of CAD software, the content area emphasizes design standards, industry drawing standards, and application of codes and regulations. ART (COMMERCIAL ART): The Digital Arts courses at Rio Hondo go beyond software training. Design issues, aesthetics and problem solving are always integrated into the courses. All of the Commercial Arts courses are taught by instructors with strong backgrounds in art and design. ART (STUDIO ART): The Studio Arts courses at Rio Hondo College introduce the beginner to materials and methods while challenging the experienced artist to explore and achieve in skill development, problem solving and creative expression. Students are exposed to both traditional and contemporary art making processes. Courses include two and three dimensional design, freehand drawing, life drawing, and representational and abstract painting. |
ART HISTORY: The Art History courses offered at RHC introduce students to artistic traditions from around the world and across time, enabling students to understand the visual arts as tangible expressions of the cultures of the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Art History offers an interdisciplinary approach, exploring the relationships between artistic developments and many other disciplines including history, politics, religion, music, philosophy, and anthropology. |
ASSOCIATED DEGREE NURSING (ADN) PROGRAM - REGISTERED NURSING: The Health Science and Nursing Division offers the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program to prepare students for the Registered Nurse (RN) licensing examination. This is a two year program designed to prepare students for employment as a registered nurse. At the completion of the program, each graduate will be a planner and provider of care, provider of safety, communicator, client teacher and member of the profession. |

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY: The Rio Hondo College Automotive Technology Program is an ASE-Certified program that provides opportunities for its students to become educated, responsible, and employable community members. Completers are prepared to become ASE Certified in a variety of subjects ranging from General Service to a Licensed Smog Technician. The faculty recognizes the importance of preparing automotive technology students to work on all types of vehicles in a variety of service and repair facilities as the modern automobile evolves. CALCULUS: The Calculus program delivers curriculum specifically designed to allow students to transfer to a four-year university. Many students taking courses in the Calculus program choose majors in the sciences, engineering, finance, business administration (many MBA programs now require a full year of Calculus), and the medical sciences, to name a few. All the courses in the Calculus Program promote and improve skills in reading, written communication, and critical thinking. These skills are stressed throughout the various courses in the program as students must be able to apply their mathematical knowledge in order to solve problems. |
CERTIFIED NURSE'S ASSISTANT (CNA): This entry level nursing program strives to be an exemplary program that provides opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds, gender, ethnicity's and cultures to be educated, responsible and caring community members. CHEMISTRY: The Chemistry Department at Rio Hondo College provides a challenging academic experience for students with diverse backgrounds and educational goals. The Department supports enrollment in other programs at the College, particularly the Biological Sciences and Nursing. The program provides a safe and engaging laboratory experience for students to learn the fundamentals of the subject through quality instruction using modern techniques and equipment. CHICANO STUDIES: The Chicana/o Studies Program and its Associate of Arts Degree is multidisciplinary as it draws from humanities, language and fine arts, and the social sciences. This course of study focuses on the experiences of Mexican Americans with the intent of recognizing the socio-historical, political, and economic contributions of Mexican Americans to United States. |
CHILD DEVELOPMENT: The Child Development/Education Department provides students with knowledge of Child Development/Education concepts, theories and applications along with information and techniques to ensure success in the Child Development field's multidisciplinary career paths. |
CIVIL DESIGN TECHNOLOGY, CIVIL DESIGN AND DRAWING CONTENT AREA: The Civil Design Technology and Civil Design and Drawing content area prepares students to work as CAD technicians / designers in the wide ranging civil career field. This career field includes jobs in structural design drawing, piping drawing, transportation design drawing. environmental design drawing and land development design drawing. The content area provides instruction in CAD software applications that include: ESRI Arc-View GIS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, REVIT, and Bentley Build, Autodesk Civil 3D and MicroStation In-Roads. In addition to application of CAD software, the content area emphasizes design standards, industry drawing standards, and application of codes and regulations. DANCE: The Rio Hondo Dance Program is noted for the high quality of its productions and the personal attention given to its dancers. The two annual department concerts showcase faculty, guest artist, and student choreography. DRUG STUDIES: The Human Services/Drug Studies program is designed to prepare students for para-professional jobs in social service and/or addiction treatment agencies. Completion of the Drug Studies certificate and/or degree provide students with a fundamental requirement for state approval as Certified Addiction Treatment Counselors. The content area provides instruction in CAD software applications that include: 2 and 3d applications such as AutoCAD as well as parametric applications such as SolidWorks and Inventor. GENERAL EDUCATION BIOLOGY: The General Education Biology Program offers quality general education biology curricula to all students of the College. This program delivers life science courses to complement and enhance the General Education offerings of the College . In addition to meeting the basic elements of a life science requirement, all general education biology classes emphasize critical thinking and problem solving skills particularly in the laboratory activities. Some of the other skills emphasized within our courses include the use of mathematics and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. MESA: MESA and the TRiO Support Student Services STEM Program enable educationally and financially disadvantaged students to prepare for and graduate from a four-year college or university with a math-based degree in STEM - Science Technology Engineering Mathematics fields. In addition through MESA/TRiO SSS STEM, students develop academic and leadership skills, increase educational performance, and gain confidence in their ability to compete professionally. MESA/TRiO SSS STEM has particular interest in and focus on students from those groups who historically have had the lowest levels of attainment to four-year and graduate level STEM programs. STUDENT SUCCESS & RETENTION: The Office of Student Success & Retention develops and enhances efforts throughout the college to improve student learning in the core areas of reading, writing, English as a New Language (formerly known as ESL), math, and learning strategies. Focusing mainly on basic skills, these current efforts include providing academic enrichment programs, such as, Summer Bridge, Springboard, Gateway Tutoring, and Fast Track Learning Communities.
