Dr. Jeannette Duarte has been teaching communication classes at Rio Hondo since the fall of 1994. In the year 2000 she was hired as a full-time instructor. Jeannette earned her Bachelor’s degree at Oregon State University, her Master’s degree from Texas A&M University, and her Doctorate from Arizona State University in Rhetorical Theory and Criticism. She is primarily interested in teaching public speaking as public conversation, and greatly appreciates and respects the power involved in delivering public messages. Her two-fold goal in the classroom is to assist students in fine-tuning their own unique ways of creating and delivering speeches, and to motivate them to seize and seek out the grand opportunity to speak publicly in their communities and careers. Dr. Duarte is a part-time coach for the Rio Hondo Speech Team, and volunteers time to judge competitions for local organizations such as the Santa Fe Springs Lions Club and Fullerton Rotary. In addition to teaching at Texas A&M and Arizona State, she has taught at many local institutions including Chapman University, Fullerton College, Mount San Antonio College, Santiago Canyon College, and Santa Ana College.

Gil completed his Bachelor's degree in Communication at Cal. Poly Pomona and the University of Northern Colorado. His Master's degree in Speech Communication was completed at Cal. State Fullerton. Gil's specialty areas are fairly broad; specifically, they include public discourse (dissertation's variables on audience responses to humor), interpersonal, intergroup/intercultural communication, and communication theory. Currently, Gil is the Director of the Speech team at Rio Hondo College. Gil's teaching style is eclectic. He tries to teach from a combination of a games perspective, cognitive perspective, and a cultural perspective. To expand, he wants the class to be fun, the audience to remember your speeches, and for you to be able to deliver speeches to our Southern California culture. His mantra for the past few semesters has been "students learn by doing." His leadership style tends to be slightly more macro-management than micro-management. Thanks for taking the risk to be here; Gil will work hard to make it a worthwhile experience for you.
